A 35,000 lb/hr 500 psig design 1992 Nebraska watertube boiler with feedwater system and Econostak economizer is currently in transit to Coahuila, Mexico for Deacero Steel, the second largest producer of steel wire worldwide. With the help of representative Gary Bartlett, Nationwide Boiler was able to secure the sale to help Deacero supplement the new power island providing the gas turbine with steam augmentation and NOx control.

To learn more about the project and Deacero Steel, check out our latest press release.

Boiler operators know that one of the most critical aspects of operating a boiler is well balanced water chemistry.  To ensure a well balance mix involves continually monitoring makeup water, condensate, feedwater and boiler water qualities.

ABB Inc’s Jon Penn recently published an article in Power Engineering that lists four major contaminants that jeopardize power plant operation and maintenance:  dissolved oxygen, hydrazine, sodium and silica.  As mentioned in the article, “The absence of adequate monitoring and control will almost certainly lead to both increased costs and more frequent component failures. Evidence shows that allowing boiler chemistry to vary from specified limits can result in expensive plant outages, potentially incurring costs of more than $1 million per day.”

This is an important subject for all boiler owners and proper water treatment will increase the life of your equipment.  You can read the entire article at: http://www.power-eng.com/articles/print/volume-118/issue-2/abma-special-section/four-boiler-contaminants-that-jeopardize-power-plant-operation-and-maintenance.html

It’s that time for the annual Western Regional Boiler Association Conference, March 11-13, 2014 at the Red Lion Hotel in Port Angeles, WA.  Nationwide Boiler will be exhibiting and Rental Sales Manager Michael Medina will be available to discuss boiler room contingency planning strategies and immediate boiler solutions.

This year’s agenda will focus primarily on the processes and technologies that went into the creation of the new Nippon Paper Industries (NPI) Co-generation facility located in Port Angeles.  NPI USA operates a paper mill at the site producing 165,000 tons per year of lightweight mechanical papers. The plant converts residual forest waste biomass to green electricity.  We hope to see you in Washington.  Visit http://boiler-wrba.org for more information.

After twenty-nine years of service and dedication at Nationwide Boiler, shop superintendent Woody Lohse is retiring.

Woody started out at Nationwide on January 14, 1985 as a mechanic pipe fitter, following work as a service technician and testing technician in the shop. Finally, he was promoted to shop superintendent in 1992 and has been running the shop ever since. Prior to joining the Nationwide crew, he worked at Wilkinson, another rental company for lifting equipment, and a manufacturer of amusement park rides.

Woody has contributed to Nationwide’s success in many ways and is a man of many talents. He works well with everyone, from customers to vendors to colleagues and everyone in between, and he will always be known for his knowledge of the trade and ability to fix just about anything. His ambition and drive motivated others, and the generosity of his time and skills extended to all, helping out whenever he was needed.

Woody intends to keep busy with multiple projects throughout his retirement. Instead of building boilers, he will be rebuilding his 1940 Chevrolet 4-door Deluxe Sedan, something he has been planning to do for 41 years. Along with his car project, he plans to keep busy with home renovations, trips to the lake, and drinking plenty of wine with good food and friends.

Nationwide Boiler would like to extend our gratitude to Woody for his many years of hard work and dedication. Everyone here at Nationwide wishes Woody the best as his new journey in life unfolds. He will truly be missed.
