Temporary Steam Plant Provides Uninterrupted Service

Nationwide Boiler Case Studies - Chemical Processing Summary
Temporarily replace facility steam plant
Reduce NOx emissions
Provide uninterrupted supply of steam
Provide a water treatment plant
Background
A major chemical manufacturer requires large amounts of steam in the processing of materials used in the fabrication of polyethylene products. In addition to providing their own process steam, their facility steam plant also supplies steam to another chemical processing company located nearby.

Problem
The chemical processing facility steam plant’s performance and thermal efficiency characteristics were relatively poor. Since the existing plant was decades old, there was a high desire to install a new, low NOx emissions plant (30 ppm) which would operate with higher reliability, increased plant efficiency and reduced fuel costs.

While a new steam plant was being constructed, process steam and the steam provided to the neighboring plant could not be interrupted.

To ensure this, two complete and independent boilers were installed, providing 100% redundancy.

Solution
Two, temporary rental mobile boilers were connected to the steam main previously connected to the facility boilers. In addition, a complete water-treatment plant was installed to replace the facility water conditioning system. Arrangements were made to connect the temporary system immediately prior to the shutdown of the facility steam plant that was being replaced.

Results
A temporary steam plant was connected to the existing steam main. Installation was completed in minimum time and with no interruption to on-going operations. The system operated until the new facility steam plant was brought on line.

Equipment Used
Two 70,000 lb/hr, low NOx, trailer-mounted rental boilers
Two 70,000 lb/hr, mobile feedwater vans
