About Nationwide Boiler

Fremont, CA, February 23, 2009

Nationwide Boiler recently took part in the airlift of two large watertube boilers aboard the Antonov AN124-100 from San Francisco International Airport to Darwin, Australia on February 13th. Powerhouse Equipment & Engineering Company, Nationwide Boiler’s East Coast Partner, received an emergency order from ConocoPhillips to supply two boilers, one 70,000 lb/hr, and one 75,000 lb/hr to be delivered quickly for the production of liquefied natural gas at their LNG plant in Darwin, Australia. The total weight of both boilers was over 80 tons. The 70,000 lb/hr 400 psi boiler was a late model trailer-mounted unit from Nationwide Boiler’s rental fleet and the 75,000 lb/hr 350psi boiler was a new skid-mounted unit from Powerhouse’s inventory.

“The shipment and transportation of these units is not only a major accomplishment, but also a major undertaking” said Larry Day, Vice President of Nationwide Boiler. “We usually ship large international bound equipment by boat, often taking several weeks for delivery. By aircraft, delivery is cut to days so for time sensitive projects where loss of production or downtime needs to be minimized this is a viable and economic means of transport. With very little room to spare, our engineers must ensure that everything is exactly measured and accounted for before it can be loaded onto the aircraft. This is the third project in the last seven years that the Antonov was used to ship our boilers.”

Both boilers were shipped from Fremont, California by D-Hill Trucking Company where they were tested and prepared for export shipment to San Francisco International Airport. The skid-mounted boiler was loaded onto the aircraft by rigging equipment and a specially designed ramp for precise placement of the boiler into the fuselage of the aircraft. The trailer-mounted boiler was backed into the aircraft by truck. Freight forwarding and logistics were handled by Morgan Systems International, based in Houston, TX.

The Antonov AN124-100 aircraft, originally designed for the Russian Air Force, has a carrying capacity of 330,000 lbs and a cargo size of 118 feet by 21 feet by 14.5 feet. Delivery of the boilers took a total of three days, refueling in Alaska, Russia and the Philippines, before making final delivery in Australia. The boilers are planned to be installed and in operation over the next two weeks.
