Giving Back at Nationwide Boiler's 38th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." ―Winston Churchill

NBI PB Golf Tourn 2018 110
Nationwide Boiler’s 38th Annual Charity Golf Tournament was one for the books. We started off the week with a practice round at the Spyglass Hill Golf Course, with 48 golfers competing in a scramble and ‘Bushwood Ball’ competition. This led us to our welcoming banquet where guests dressed up in themed attire, based off of the movie “Caddyshack”. With gophers and baby ruth candy bars at each table, and a sign that read, “Welcome to the Bushwood Country Club” upon entry to the banquet hall, the theme was in full effect.

Guests enjoyed drinks, mingled, and purchased raffle tickets during the cocktail hour in the new Fairway One Room at Pebble Beach. Dinner consisted of a clam bake buffet with mouthwatering lobster, oysters, prime rib, and more, followed by a number of choices for desert. At the end of the night, President Larry Day, or Judge Smales for the evening, announced the scramble & ‘Bushwood Ball’ winners, along with our big winner that evening, Steve Graves from Campbell-Sevey. Mr. Graves won the “Raffle of a Lifetime” prize; a golf stay & play package at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, including $600 in airfare.

Bright and early the next morning hole signs were set out on the green and guests arrived to check-in for the big day of golf. Golfers had the opportunity to buy in for the “Best Ball” prize (a 50/50 style competition), purchase mulligans, and receive their thank-you gift, a Pebble Beach golf towel. As foursomes finished up at the 18th-hole, scorecards were collected and golfers had time to relax and socialize at the scoring room as other foursomes completed the course. That evening, over 100 guests arrived at the Pebble Beach Room for the awards banquet and ceremony, where additional fundraising activities were held. This included a card raffle with a $1,000 prize, and both silent and live auction events.

The food was delicious, the speakers were fantastic, and the event was a huge success. At the end of the evening, Nationwide Boiler’s Bill Testa announced our tournament winners: Miles Freeman from HTS brought home first place in the callaway division, Mike Moore from MG Sales brought home first place in the Handicap division, and our overall low gross winner was Jordan Bliss. The big winners, however, were Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area and the ABMA Scholarship fund. Nationwide President, Larry Day, Nationwide Boiler 2018 281announced at the end of the night that we raised at least $50,000 for the charities. Our final donation amount was $51,435, and a check was cut for each charity in the amount of $25,717.50.

It is truly a joy hosting such a great event with such friendly and generous people. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.

Save the date! Next year’s tournament is scheduled for May 8 – 9, 2019 and will coincide with Pebble Beach’s Centennial Anniversary and the return of the US Open Championship in June, which will make the course conditions for our tournament much tougher (i.e. narrow fairways and longer rough). It is surely an event you won’t want to miss!

Record Amount Raised at 39th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Nationwide Boiler recently wrapped up our 39th Annual Charity Golf Tournament and we are excited to announce that this year, we raised a record amount in support of Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area and the American Boiler Manufacturers Association Randy Rawson Scholarship Fund. With the generosity and support of 56 golfers, 106 banquet attendees, and over 50 corporate and individual sponsors, we raised a grand total of $64,000! A huge thank-you to everyone involved for the outpouring of support.

The tournament began on Wednesday, May 8th with a practice round of golf and scramble competition at the Poppy Hills Golf Course. Guests worked up an appetite for our traditional Clam Bake Buffet that evening, where we raffled off an ounce of gold to the lucky winners, Scott & Carol Sanders from HTS. We also announced the winning foursome from the scramble, which included Grant Carter & Jack Oliver from ADCO Companies, and Jon Craig & Nick Kammeyer from C&C Boiler, two of our long-time representative companies.

Tournament play began bright and early the next day at the renowned Pebble Beach Golf Links. Guests participated in several fundraising activities both during the round of golf and that evening at the awards ceremony & banquet. These activities included mulligan sales, best ball competitions, a unique card raffle game, and silent and open auction events. 39th Annual Golf SponsorsUpon conclusion of our Roaring Twenties theme banquet, the following tournament winners were announced:

Giving Back When the World Needs it Most

In a time as challenging as what we are facing today, giving back is more important now than ever. Non-profits are being hit hard; annual fundraisers are being cancelled or postponed and donations are lacking due to the financial struggles of the economy. In fact, the team at Nationwide Boiler had to make the unfortunate decision to postpone the 40th Anniversary of our Charity Golf Tournament, an event that now raises an average of $50,000 each year. In 2019, the total raised was split between the ABMA Scholarship Fund and Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area.

Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area is one of the largest and most productive chapters nationwide. In 2019, they granted 347 wishes for local kids with critical illnesses and assisted with a record-breaking 110 wishes for kids from across the world. Since March, the organization has had the painful task of communicating to families that over 80 wishes are on hold until it is safe to commence.

As CEO Betsy Biern stated, “We’re far from alone in experiencing unprecedented challenges during this global pandemic. In a way, the entire world has become a wish family—we’ve received a terrible diagnosis and must put ordinary concerns aside as we face a new and sometimes terrifying reality. During a time like this, I take even more inspiration from our wish kids and their extraordinary resilience. Like them and for them, we will move forward with as much courage and grace as possible under the most difficult of circumstances. There simply is no other option.”

While the organization is currently postponing wishes, they are still taking and processing wish referrals and have definite plans to grant those waiting wishes. They are even looking into ways to grant children’s true wishes virtually.

With the tournament cancellation a reality, we at Nationwide Boiler were determined to find a way to continue our tradition of giving back. Two months after the original scheduled event and time spent analyzing the effects of the pandemic on our business, Nationwide Boiler is excited to be in the position and able to donate $10,000 to Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area. Furthermore, three companies who committed early on to sponsoring our tournament have also chosen to contribute their funds, bringing the final endowment to $12,000. A big thanks to Alzeta, DJ Conley, and Wilkinson Companies! If you are interested and able to help support the cause, too, visit www.sf.wish.org.

Nationwide Boiler’s 40th Annual Charity Golf Tournament is now scheduled for May 6 – 7, 2021 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. We will resume with our “Back to the Eighties” theme as planned, and all funds raised will be in support of both the ABMA Scholarship Fund and Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area.

If you are interested in attending our tournament next year, contact our Tournament Chair, Chelsey Ryker, at golf@nationwideboiler.com to be included in our invite list.

$40,000 Raised at Nationwide Boiler's 40th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Last year, Nationwide Boiler had to make the hard and necessary decision to postpone our 40th Annual Charity Golf Tournament due to the rapid growth of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, however, is a different story. We were able to coordinate a safe and successful event earlier this month, once again in support of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area and the ABMA Scholarship Fund. With about two-thirds of our normal attendance, more than 50 sponsors and donors, and no in-person banquets, we are happy to announce that we raised a total of $40,000 for these two outstanding organizations!

The tournament began with a practice round, 4-man scramble at The Links at Spanish Bay, followed by tournament play at the renowned Pebble Beach Golf Links. The weather was near perfect for the two days of golf and after their round at Pebble Beach, guests enjoyed lunch and drinks on the patio right off of the 18th hole.  To comply with local COVID restrictions around gatherings, no in-person banquets were held. While this eliminated multiple revenue streams, it did provide the opportunity for us to incorporate a virtual / online auction for the first time in the history of our event. This new feature allowed those not in attendance with the opportunity to participate, support, and purchase items from our auction. In addition to the virtual auction, we presented golf awards, announced the raffle winner, and played a game of Jeopardy in a virtual fashion via a Zoom meeting. Overall, it was a great week, a successful event, and our guests were happy to be back at Pebble Beach after a year off.

Congratulations to our tournament winners:
Low Gross Champion - Jim Lohmeyer, Blue Cross Blue Shield
Handicap Flight Champion - Vern Eriksen, Nooter/Eriksen
Callaway Flight Champion - Miles Freeman, Heat Transfer Specialists (HTS)

A huge thank-you out to everyone involved! We wouldn't be able to make this happen without the many sponsors, donors, and guests who support us year after year. We are extremely fortunate to be able to continue this tradition of giving back to  organizations that do so much for our community. We did $40K, with 40 golfers for our 40th Anniversary - here's to another 40 years!
