A Peek Into the History of One Nationwide Rental Boiler

Nationwide Boiler's rental fleet consists of many boilers in a variety of steam output capacities and design pressures. Some boilers in  our rental fleet remain rental units throughout their useful life, while others find permanent homes through used boiler sales. One unit in particular has seen the best of both worlds.

This 70,000 lb/hr trailer-mounted package watertube boiler was originally manufacutred in 1997 and was an active part of our rental fleet for roughly 14 years. In 2011 it was purchased by one of Nationwide Boiler’s valued customers in Newark, CA, less than 5 miles from our headquarters in Fremont. In addition to the boiler package itself, we supplied our CataStak™ SCR system for sub 5 ppm NOx emissions and removed the boiler from the trailer for permanent installation within their facility.

Fast forward to 2016, when we received word that the facility was closing. Nationwide was given the opportunity to re-acquire the boiler buy the boiler back, as it was still in good operating condition. Knowing the quality of boilers that we maintain, rent, and sell, as well as the maintenance history from its current location, we took advantage of this opportunity and purchased the boiler.

The unit has been fully reconditioned and installed on a trailer for mobility and is now on it's first rental job out of retirement. Great job to Nationwide Boiler's shop personnel who took part in bringing this boiler back to life. On to the next one!

40,000 lb/hr High Pressure Boiler Is Back on the Market!

Here at Nationwide Boiler, we pride ourselves for having one of the largest, newest, and most innovative rental fleets in the industry. Our rental fleet includes a large number of units in a range of sizes, and we pay attention to our customer’s needs when evaluating our fleet and adding new equipment For instance, we recently unveiled the world’s first 110,000 lb/hr trailer-mounted superheat boilers, and the world’s first 1,000 hp mobile boiler room.

We have finished reconditioning another one of our unique rental units, a 40,000 lb/hr, 700 psig design, saturated steam, trailer-mounted Babcock & Wilcox watertube boiler. This unit was purchased for our rental fleet in 1994, and has only been on one rental project which lasted 15 years! Upon its return, we decided it was in need of a complete overhaul, including a full tube replacement, brand new low NOx burner, new feedwater and control piping, new insulation and casing. An ASME witnessed and approved hydrostatic test was performed upon completion of the tube repairs.

This boiler is currently being stored on the East Coast and is available for rent or for sale. Call us today at 1-800-227-1966 for a quick quote if this boiler will fit your next temporary or permanent steam requirement!

Avoid a "Bad" Boiler Rental Project

During the course of Nationwide Boiler’s almost 50 year history in the boiler rental business, we occasionally involve ourselves in jobs that ultimately do not run as well as we would like.  Often times, though no fault of our own, customers may be unhappy due to the overall project results.  We believe that we can learn from our past mistakes.  It is also important to ask, “How can we avoid these problems?”.

After a good deal of investigation, we have listed the top five (5) reasons as to “How A Boiler Rental Job Can Go Bad?”.

1.   Inadequate Planning and Budget Allotment
•    advance planning and timing
•    budget for:  rent, freight, installation, weatherization, start-up training, operation, water treatment, dismantling, return freight
•    cushion for extra rental days which may be required
•    emissions testing

2.   Non-Engineered Installation
•    sizing lines, pressure drop calculations, electrical loads
•    permitting issues (emissions, pressure vessel, operating, construction)
•    steam required – gross versus net, average versus peak load
•    extra equipment required such as 2nd header valve, gas regulator, feedwater pump, water softener, safety valve resetting
•    adequate utilities:  water, fuel, electrical, blowdown, drains, instrument air
•    provide loads or means of venting during start-up

3.   Lack of Qualified Operators
•    training and licensing
•    familiar with controls and type of boiler (watertube versus firetube, package versus field erected, gas versus wood fired)
•    daily logs, regular blowdown and lubrication/maintenance

4.   Poor or Lack of Water Treatment
•    get  professional involvement (Nalco, Betz, Garratt-Callahan)
•    monitor water quality and blowdown rates
•    source of make-up or condensate (get analysis)

5.   Lack of Maintenance
•    users responsibility (treat it like your own)
•    hands on – not hands off attitude
